When you have a work permit for Thailand or you have a marriage visa or a retirement visa then you need a permit to leave the country and return. You also need to report every 90 days. The re-entry permit for Thailand allows you to leave Thailand without making your current visa or work permit null and void. In order to return to Thailand and continue where you had left of you need to have a re-entry permit. If you leave Thailand without a re-entry permit you in effect cancel your current work permit or extended visa. The entire process would then have to be started again if you had failed to obtain a re-entry permit. Obtain this permit before leaving Thailand! The other process is called 90 day reporting. Once you have a retirment visa for Thailand or a 1 year marriage visa you need to tell Thai Immigration every 90 days where you are living. This cimply means you need to go and fill in a form at immigration to show them any change of address or simply to confirm that you still live at the same address. There is no penalty as yet for not reporting however obtain another visa or work permit might become tough. Always ensure that you report to Thai immigration.
